Delete your account
You can delete your rm8tes account and the data in it at any time, and you do not have to give a reason. There are two ways: do it yourself in the app, which takes about ten seconds, or email us and we will do it for you — which is the route to use if you can no longer sign in, or no longer have the app installed.
Deletion happens immediately, it is permanent, and we have no way to recover a deleted account afterwards.
Save your evidence pack first. If there is any chance you will need your photos for a deposit dispute, generate and save the PDF evidence pack before you delete. A pack you exported beforehand is a file on your own device, outside our systems, and deleting your account does not touch it. Once the account is gone we cannot produce another one.
Delete it yourself, in the app
Open rm8tes, sign in, and:
- tap your profile picture at the top of the home screen to open the profile screen;
- scroll to the bottom, to DANGER ZONE, and tap DELETE ACCOUNT;
- read the warning and tap CONTINUE, then DELETE FOREVER on the confirmation after it.
The app deletes everything described below, signs you out, and returns to the opening screen. There is no waiting period and nothing else to do.
Ask us to delete it
Email privacy@rm8tes.com from the email address you signed up with, and say that you want your account deleted. That is all we need — no form, and no reason required.
Sending from the address on the account is how we know the request is really yours; if you can no longer use that address, tell us and we will find another way to confirm it is you before we delete anything. We will complete the deletion and confirm it to you within one month, and normally within a couple of days.
What is erased
These go in every case, whether you delete the account yourself or ask us to:
- your login — your email address and password, or the link to your Google or Apple account if that is how you signed in;
- your profile, including your name and profile photo;
- every diary entry you wrote and every photo attached to one, in every household you belonged to;
- your household memberships;
- your usage analytics, and the secret key that your capturer codes were locked with.
If nobody else is left in your household — you rent alone, or every flatmate has already gone — that is the whole story. The property, the tenancy, the checklists, every audit photo and every stored photo file go with it.
If you still share a household with flatmates
A property in rm8tes belongs to a household rather than to one person, so some of its records are your flatmates’ evidence as much as yours and we cannot simply erase them. In that case the property, tenancy and checklists pass to whichever flatmate has been in the household longest, and the audit photos you captured stay in the household’s sealed record. They keep the capturer code they were stamped with — a code that holds no name, no email address and no account number, is specific to that one property, and can no longer be traced to anybody once the key behind it is destroyed with your account.
This is the one limit on erasure, and the Privacy Policy sets it out in full, along with why we think it is the right balance. If you disagree, or your situation is not the ordinary one, email us at privacy@rm8tes.com and we will look at it properly and reply within one month.
Two things deletion does not reach
Backups. Copies of your data may survive for a short while in the backups we keep so the service can be recovered after a failure. We do not use them for anything else, and your data disappears from them as older backups are replaced by newer ones — no more than 30 days.
Your Google or Apple account. Deleting your rm8tes account removes the connection from our side. What we cannot reach is the record on their side that you once used their sign-in here: rm8tes may still be listed among the apps you have signed in to with that account, and removing it is done in their settings.
